Adolphe Valette - A French Influence in Manchester, Manchester City Art Gallery, 16 Jul - 4 Sep 1994, no 14. Illustrated in the catalogue.
Lowry's teacher, the French impressionist Adolphe Valette produced a number of portraits of his first wife Gabriela.
Gabriela de Bolivar was one of Valette's students, of Venezuelan nationality and he married her in 1909. She became his muse and appeared in many of his paintings. Gabriela died in 1917 and two years later he married a fellow French national, Andree Pallez, a lecturer in French at Manchester University. This painting came originally from the collection of Andree Valette and was sold at one of their first Valette exhibitions in the early 1970s. It has been in a private collection ever since.
This painting is of museum quality and shows what a superb artist Valette was. He was a master of composition and has used an elevated perspective to add depth to the painting. The bowl and jug and other items on the bedside table and Gabriela's dress are all beautifully painted.
