General Notes

Valette did a number of paintings and sketches of his mother Madeline and this one was done late in her life. Madelaine was born in 1846 in in Saint-Jean-Soleymieux and she married Valette's father, Ferdinand in 1872. Adolphe was born on 13th October 1976 and was the 3rd of 4 children.

When his mother died in early 1928, Valette left Manchester and went back to Blace in France. He moved into his mother's house in the Village of Blaceret. Madelaine is buried in the Cemetary of Villefrance-sur-Soane.

Inscribed top left " L'Oreille plus loin" " The Ear Further Back" indicating this was a working drawing for future reference.
