The following letter from Harold Riley is supplied with this painting:
Lowry particularly liked the balloon man who we saw on the Salford Market at Cross Lane. When he looked at the painting (Balloon seller), he made a comment that, "He couldn't stand up in those boots sir", so he scraped them out and he repainted them on the spot.
