General Notes

In the village of Gatley, in Cheshire, Lowry found High Grove House. This mansion was built in the mid-18th century in the High Grove Estate for the Bowers family, who were hatters from Yorkshire and Manchester. It was demolished in the early 1960s.

He did this drawing in 1926. Standing abandoned and alone the house represented Lowry's emotional state and clearly fascinated him, as he did and oil of it in 1934 and another drawing in 1937.
