General Notes

Alan Lowndes (1921 - 1978) is best known for his painting of Stockport and St Ives but he had always loved the circus and in 1959 he spent a month travelling with the Belle Vue Circus. He made many drawing of circus people, animals and performers and continued to paint these scenes for the rest of his life. Sadly many of his early Circus works were destroyed in a fire in his King Street Studio in 1959.
