Royal Academy of London, Lowry Retorpspective, 1976 - The Joseph Fitton Collection no 88 (Bears label)
This small drawing comes from a sketch book owned by the late Joseph Fitton. Joseph Fitton was a Rochdale business man with a discerning involvement in many aspects of the arts. His collection of Lowrys spanned over 66 years of the artist's output and comprised more than 70 drawings and an impressive collection of oil paintings.
During the last few years of Lowry's life the artist and patron forged a strong friendship. Joseph Fitton had many fond memories of Lowry and their frequent meetings and he acquired a deep admiration for his work.
Joseph Fitton died aged 84 in 2009. He had sold most of his Lowry works in auction in the late 1990s but he had kept a number of Lowry drawings and a sketchbook Lowry gave him which contained this drawing. The complete sketch book was exhibited in Lowry's record breaking Memorial Exhibition at the Royal Academy in 1976.
