Tib Lane Gallery, Manchester, Adolphe Valette, October 1971
The label on the back shows that this painting was originally sold nearly 40 years ago in the first-ever exhibition of Valette's work at the Tib Lane Gallery in Manchester in October 1971, where it was purchased by the northern artist William Ralph Turner. William Turner.
Turner exhibited at the Tib Lane Gallery in 1962 and 1968 and his relationship with the gallery is covered in the book William Ralph Turner, written by Stuart Archer and Bill Clark in 2010. Turner was a great admirer of Adolphe Valette, so it's no surprise he bought the Barton Bridge painting in this first exhibition. He also owned a small Valette Study of Albert Square which hung in his house in Congleton.
