The Perera Collection
Clark Art Ltd
The Perera Collection of paintings and drawings by Pierre Adolphe Valette, September 21st to October 28th 1984
This wonderful self-portrait showscases Valette's drawing skills. This drawing is particularly interesting as it comes from the collection of Mr & Mrs Perera, a Portsmouth based couple who were Valette's first major collectors. During the 1970's they assembled a large collection of his works. The collection started in 1967 when Mr Mario Perera went on a business trip to Jersey and bought a small Valette landscape watercolour which Andree Valette had put on display in a department store. This initial purchase led to the Pereras building up the largest collection of Valette's in private hands. By 1983 they owned 70 Valette works, which were exhibited in Portsmouth City Art Gallery in February - March 1983. By 1984 their collection had increased to 150 works, which were exhibited at Salford Art Gallery in September - October 1984. This drawing was shown in the Salford exhibition and was used on the exhibition poster.
In 1987 and 1991 a large part of the Perera collection was sold at auctions held at Christies in London, from where they have found their way into many private collections.
