This drawing of The Half-Witted Child was originally owned by the author and critic Maurice Collis and is a great example of his line drawings executed in 1920s and early 1930s. It is one of a number of preparatory sketches for an oil painting of the same name. During the line drawing period, Lowry made continual use of scenes such as this, taken from life and observed with meticulous care.
In 1951 Lowry's agents, Reid and Lefevre in London, commissioned Collis to write a monograph on Lowry. He travelled up to Manchester to interview Lowry and his pioneering book The Discovery of L.S. Lowry was published later that year.
This drawing is one of a number of works bought by Collis directly from Lowry. Collis has written the following text in pencil on the original backing board: 'Drawing dated 1931 for the oil painting The Half-Witted Child. The drawing was given to me by Lowry when I visited him in Manchester
in 1951. Signed Maurice Collis. 23/6/65'
There is also a note on the bottom of the drawing which says that this is the second study for the oil of The Half-Witted Child which Lowry completed in 1935. The first drawing was dated 1929 and was also owned by Maurice Collis.
