The Lowry Estate
Christies Modern British Sale 2007
Private Collection
Carol Ann Lowry gave this drawing to her husband and it was one of 3 lots from the Lowry estate sold in Christies sale on 16th Nov 2007.
Only a small number of watercolours exist. In his book Lowry a Visionary Artist, Michael Howard writes: Lowry was temperamentally unsuited to watercolour, although in the late Fifties he made use of a box of watercolours that came into his possession. Some of the resulting works have an undeniable charm, but he never developed this aspect of his work. It dries to fast and it's not flexible enough, he said. He was better suited to oils, a malleable medium which he could work on over periods of time.
