Private collection - a gift from L.S. Lowry.
L.S. Lowry acquired his drawing skills by attending Adolphe Valette's art and drawing evening classes at the Manchester Municipal School of Art. Lowry attended these classes for over 10 years and in 1907 he also had private lessons by another artist, William Fitz.
This lovely, subtle drawing clearly shows the strength of Lowry's academic ability and although Lowry later adopted his own style, he always acknowledged the debt he owed to Valette. Lowry gave this drawing to the previous local owner in the mid-1970s and in return she cooked him lunch at her house.
