General Notes

L S Lowry's 1913 painting of Wardley Farm was given by Lowry to Dora Craston, who was a student of Adolphe Valette, who also taught Lowry.

According to Dora Craston and recorded by Shelley Rohde in her book about Lowry, Lowry asked her to marry him, however she married another of Valette's pupils, Charles Holmes.

In the 1960s Lowry asked Dora if he could have the picture returned as he told her it formed an important part of his collection. She decided against this and the painting remained in the family until it was acquired by Clark Art.

Charles Holmes was an important figure in northern art as he organised the purchase by Manchester City Art Galleries of their Adolphe Valette paintings, a first step in the growing recognition of this Manchester-based French post-impressionist artist.
