Lowry has ancestral ties to Ireland. His grandfather was born in Belfast and as an infant moved to Port Patrick. In the early 1960s Lowry made several trip to Ireland with the artist Pat Cooke and her husband Brian. He also re-visted Ireland in 1970. They travelled there by ferry and it was the only overseas trip he made during his life. He loved Ireland and produced a series of sketches of the places he visited. The two very rare sketches of Londonderry in our Lowry and his Legacy exhibition show the landscape on either side of the River Foyle and feature his characteristic figures and dogs.
