The Stone Gallery, Newcastle upon Tyne, where acquired by a private company in the 1970s
Acquired from the above by the previous owner, and thence by descent
You see these people in the street... They stand at street corners and they are staring at something and you wonder what they are thinking when they are staring. Have you ever noticed them?'
(L.S. Lowry, quoted in Shelley Rohde, L.S. Lowry, A Life, Haus Publishing Ltd, London, 2007, p.228)
Lowry had a special love for North East England and from 1960 Sunderland became almost a second home for him. From his first visits to Berwick-on-Tweed in the 1930s, to his lengthy stays at the Seaburn Hotel in Sunderland in his later years, the region provided him with a rich source of his inspiration for his work. In May 1962 Lowry visited Micky and Tilly Marshall at The Stone Gallery in Newcastle. He eventually became a share holder of the gallery and three exhibitions of his work were held there, in 1964, 1967 and a final exhibition in 1968. The Marshalls were closely involved in the making of the Tyne Tees Television documentary Mr Lowry in 1968 and in 1981 Tilly Marshall published the best-selling book Life with Lowry.
