Theodore Major's industrial landscapes are varied and complex and Men and Sky is a classic example of the genre. The critic, F.W. Fenton called Major A Poet of Greyness and in this powerful and evocative work the paint has been applied very thickly to the surface of the board, giving it a heavily textured, almost three dimensional appearance.
Telegraph poles are a recurring feature in these grey, brooding, Wigan landscapes and there are 7 of various sizes in this painting. Major places them at various locations in the foreground and background and they give the composition added depth.
Theodore Major had a fierce love of ordinary people and his industrial paintings are often populated with anonymous figures which seem to be battling against the formidable odds stacked against them. These figures are usually highlighted in white to make them stand out in the landscape.
