LeFevre Gallery, London, circa 1970s, where acquired by E.T Foster and thence by decent.
Drawn in 1960, this Cumbrian coastal town, situated on the Solway estuary, appears in a number of works by Lowry. One of Lowry's connections with the town was through his friendship with the Reverend Geoffrey Bennett who he first met in 1926. Bennett was then a clerk in the London and County Westminster Bank where Lowry's cousin, Grace Shepherd also worked. When 'The Reverend Gentleman', as Lowry referred to him, moved with his family to Cumbria, Lowry became a frequent guest. Lowry was also regularly visited the Cumbrian artist Sheila Fell, who lived in nearby Aspatria.
