General Notes

During the 1960s and 70s L.S. Lowry was a regular visitor to Sam's Chop House in Manchester. It was while the artist was employed as a rent collector at the nearby Pall Mall Property Company building that he began frequenting the pub. When the current owner heard about Lowry's association with Sam's, he decided to commission Preston- born sculptor Peter Hodgkinson to produce a 300kg life size bronze of the famous artist sitting at the bar.

The sculptor used a drawing by Salford artist Harold Riley of the pair having a Christmas lunch at the pub in the 1970s as a basis for the sculpture. He used a series of photographs of Lowry taken by local photographer Sefton Samuels in the 1970s to ensure that Lowry's features were portrayed as accurately as possible. He spent nearly a year creating this statue, which was first hand-moulded in clay and later cast in solid bronze.

The statue was unveiled on 23rd February 2011 to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the artist's death, it has attracted visitors to Sam's Chop House ever since. At the same time as the main sculpture, Peter Hodgkinson also produced 5 limited edition bronze heads of Lowry and we are delighted to have no 1 from the edition for sale in this exhibition. This is the first time a bronze from this series has ever come on to the market.
