Norman Cornish spent 33 years working in mines before forging a career as an artist.
Like his fried L.S. Lowry, Cornish was fascinated by the world around him and painted vivid views of ordinary life that combine unpretentious realism with nostalgia for a half-forgotten, fast-vanishing world.
Wash Day is a classic Cornish painting of everyday life in a mining community in the north-east. Children are playing front of the terraced houses with their dog, whilst the mother hang out the washing to dry on the washing lines. The pit winding gear and a smoking chimney can be seen in the background.
