From the estate of L.S. Lowry
Sunderland, Art Gallery, L.S. Lowry in the North East, 1989.
Sunderland, Art Gallery, on long term loan from the estate, 1989-2015.
The Beached Boat in this drawing is the Lebanese steamer Adelfotis II which ran aground on Herd Sands in the River Tyne of 23rd January 1963. It was on voyage from Middlesbrough to Antwerp in ballast and was seeking shelter in the Tyne after becoming disabled in a storm. The ship was eventually broken up for scrap where she lay. Lowry was a regular visitor to the North-East at this time and always stayed in the Seaburn Hotel in South Shields. This is exactly the sort of subject that would have appealed to him and it's no surprise that he visited the site and produced this wonderful drawing.
